Gwen Richardson has been an author, entrepreneur, and "boss woman" for decades. She is the author of 13 books, including Boss Women, and is a graduate of Georgetown University. She has been twice nominated for NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Literary Work, wants to inspire children to seek entrepreneurship as a career path. Richardson resides in Houston with her husband, Willie, and adult daughter, Sylvia.

Boss Women features seven African American women who started their businesses by themselves or as co-founders with family members. Some of the enterprises are relatively new, while others have been established for decades.

The businesswomen profiled in this book are Janice M. Adams (JMA Solutions), Valerie Daniels-Carter (V&J Holding Companies), Bea Dixon (Honey Pot), Janice Bryant Howroyd (The ACT One Group), Garnetta Sanders (Neta Scientific), Janell Stephens (Camille Rose Naturals), and J.C. Sykes (90 Degree Construction).

Boss Women uses poetic phrasing to make it easier for children to read and understand. While reading each poetic profile, children will be able to see themselves in these women’s successes and dream big dreams for the future. The book is also a motivational tool for adults who are seeking encouragement on their entrepreneurial journeys.

1. Why did you write this book/What was the inspiration behind this book?

All of my children’s books are centered around entrepreneurship. I wanted to write a book that included actual living, African-American women who have succeeded in business. Both children and adults can be inspired by their journeys.

2. What makes this book different from other books?

This book includes biographies of living women who are in business. To my knowledge, there is not a similar book like it on the market. It is beautifully illustrated (by an African-American female), and also includes the photos of the women along with their websites.

3. What’s the hardest part about being an author? Staying motivated and avoiding procrastination.

4 What do you love most about being an author? Being able to enlighten and inspire readers.

5. Who is your favorite author/what is your favorite book and why? I have been an avid reader since age 4 and have read thousands of books. I don’t have a particular author that is my favorite. I like a well-written, well-told story by any author.

6. What advice would you give aspiring authors? Seek advice by reading books about becoming an author from those who have succeeded; network with other authors; stay abreast of new trends. If you self-publish, seek the assistance of professionals (e.g., editor, book cover designer, formatter, marketer).

7. What question or comment are you asked most frequently about your book? What inspired me to write the book and how did I determine which women to include in it.

8. What advise do you have for aspiring authors? Seek advice by reading books about becoming an author from those who have succeeded; network with other authors; stay abreast of new trends. If you self-publish, seek the assistance of professionals (e.g., editor, book cover designer, formatter, marketer).
