In her second book series, "The Birthday Gift", Betty displays her creative storytelling in a surprisingly extraordinary way with her fictional work. She continues to inspire while lifting the words right off the pages to bring her characters to life. Readers will find themselves hoping for the best and dreaming about the characters as if they were members of their own family.

Betty’s fictional work in The Birthday Gift Book Series is included in the John 3:16 Global Placement Mission as commissioned by founder, Terry Gurley. She uses her talent to introduce readers to the greatest gift ever given to mankind. While taking them on intriguing tales of heartbreak and hope, Betty intricately weaves together stories leaving readers in suspense until the very end. What they have in common is they all beautifully deliver the gospel message found in John 3:16.

On a personal note, Betty has been married since 1986 to William Collier, the absolute love of her life, after first meeting him in middle school. They are the proud parents of two sons and a daughter-in-love, all of whom reside in Shelby County, TN.

An unexpected knock on the door derails a birthday celebration as Mrs. Williams recalls the mysterious events that prevented her beloved husband from flying back home with their daughter's priceless, life-changing gift he discovered at a flea market in the Middle East. In the opening scene, she learns in a most dramatic fashion that the absolute love of her life was murdered while in route to Los Angeles. Her faith and fortitude are unimaginably tested, but Mrs. Williams ultimately realizes that she possesses the greatest gift inside of her.

This Book Excellence Award-Winning Book is an exceptionally thought-provoking and intriguing tale that takes the reader on an emotional journey of profound heartbreak to surprising hope for the future. Although a catastrophic loss occurs, one comes away with a great sense of hopefulness in this increasingly violent world. The author intricately weaves this story together leaving readers in suspense until the very end. Be uplifted and inspired as you discover your own faith while experiencing the gift of a lifetime so cleverly embedded within the pages of this book.

Tell us about The Birthday Gift: Book 1 –  This Book Excellence Award-Winning Book is an exceptionally thought-provoking and intriguing tale that takes the reader on an emotional journey of profound heartbreak to surprising hope for the future. Although a catastrophic loss occurs, one comes away with a great sense of hopefulness in this increasingly violent world.

Is there one particular message or “moral of the story” you hope readers walk away with? After reading The Birthday Gift: Book 1, I hope readers will gain a newfound sense of hope. The book teaches readers some of life’s most important lessons including how to forgive, how to deal with heartbreak and trauma, and how to find inner strength during life’s most troubling times.

How did The Birthday Gift: Book 1 get started? Terry Gurley, a visionary artist and sculptor is the Principle Director/Creator of The Gospel Symbol. One of his pieces is The Message of the Bible sculpture. It explains the gospel of John 3:16 using a picture story. Terry approached me the first day we met after learning that I was an author and asked me to write a fictional story about the sculpture he created. He provided no guidelines for what I should write and simply asked that the gospel symbol be part of the story.

How do you see yourself in your character’s story, if at all? I intentionally named the main character Mrs. Williams because my husband’s first name is William. In order for me to feel the unfathomable loss that Mrs. Williams endured, I engulfed myself into her emotions and wrote how I thought I would feel had I been in her shoes. It was an excruciating process that broke my heart as I was writing her story. I dreamed about the characters in the book as if they were my own family which made those raw emotions truly come to life.

Where do you like to write? In my dreams, I write on location in some far away, exotic location. Out of curiosity, I’ve sometimes wondered what it would be like to write in solitude like Henry David Thoreau at Walden Pond. In reality, I write in my home office while sitting at a desk and typing on my laptop. I always start with a blank Word document and no outline. Because ideas often interrupt my sleep in the middle of the night, I make voice memos in my cell phone and then listen to them the next day when I’m sitting at the computer.

How do you choose between ideas you’d like to write about? My mind is constantly bombarded with story ideas, but before I make a decision to write anything, I seek the Lord for guidance first. I will not consider writing anything that does not bring honor and glory to God as that is the main reason why I write. It is only after careful consideration of the message I hope to deliver in a book that I will even begin to entertain the idea of actually penning a story.

What’s on the horizon for you?  What will you be writing next? Completing the series of 5 books birthed from The Birthday Gift is my top priority. Dear John is the 2nd book in the series, which will be released later in 2022. The 3rdbook, I Can Only Imagine: Bella’s Journey will make its debut in 2023. Following that will be book # 4, Mary, Did You Know? coming in 2024, and finally the climactic end to the series, book #5, WILL Is a Gift from God, which readers will have to wait for until 2025. After reading The Birthday Gift, it becomes apparent why there has to be multiple sequels. I will also launch my new business, John316 Global Publishing in 2023. As the publisher, my vision is to publish encouraging and inspirational works sharing the gospel presentation found in John 3:16 around the globe. It will be a place to discover nonfiction, fiction, poetry, blogs, and children’s books that all point readers to HIS message.

Waletta is a Louisiana native. She was born in Shreveport and raised in Bossier City. Reading has been a part of her life from a very young age.

Graduating from Texas College in Tyler, Texas, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She also holds a Master of Public Administration from The University of Oklahoma. Kiesha Jackson's peaceful life is about to change!

Her mother receives military orders to Afghanistan. Keisha goes to live with her grandparents in Magnolia, Florida. The new high school principal is far more concerned with protecting her career than protecting innocent students. When Kiesha unintentionally breaks the school's zero-tolerance policy, she enters the school-to-prison pipeline.

Will Keisha muddle in the injustice of it all? Or will she become a conduit for change?

A row of sparsely planted shrubs extended along the front of the house. She watched a large lizard leap from one of the front windows onto the decorative plant before knocking on the front door. After a moment, the door swung open to reveal a petite blond-haired, blue-eyed woman holding an adorable blond-haired, blue-eyed toddler boy. The child removed the sippy cup from his lips and tendered a delightful gum-filled smile. Chaos lay on the other side of the threshold—scattered toys and clothes, and a child dancing with Barney the Dinosaur blaring from the television. The clamor of screaming children reverberated out from other places in the house.

The woman wrinkled her nose before speaking. “Hello? May I help you?”

“Mrs. Vickers?”

“Yes?” The woman curled her lips.

Shirley squared her shoulders and sized her up. “My name is Shirley Jackson. I understand you had a problem with my daughter this afternoon.”

“Excuse me?” asked the woman with a confused look on her face.

The toddler threw his sippy cup on the floor.

“My daughter, Keisha, was the teenage girl you chased in your van this afternoon.”

Mrs. Vickers jaws dropped, and her face drained of color. “I …I don’t know what… she was throwing rocks.”

“No, she wasn’t.” Shirley stared her down. “You also felt the need to shout a few racial epithets out of your van window.”

Mrs. Vickers eyes grew large and bulgy. “I’m not prejudice or anything. I have black friends.” Vickers crinkled up her nose and mustered up a fake smile.

Shirley raised her hand and cut her off as she opened her mouth to speak. “Congratulations. I’m not here to argue with you. I’m here to warn you. Stay away from my daughter. Don’t say another word to her. If you see her walking down the street, don’t even speak to her. Not one word. Nothing!”

1.      Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I believe my writing is my ministry. Therefore, I use my writing to remind others of the love of Christ. I have had some challenges in my life. I’ve been hurt. I’ve lost loved ones. I’ve made bad choices and paid the consequences. But God has seen me through all of it. I want to share my stories and others like it, to remind people that God loves them. He knows all about our little secrets and he still loves us. My desire is to touch the hearts of readers by exposing the love of God in every facet of the lives of my characters.

2.     What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

Sometimes writing can be exhilarating. I call it my “sweet spot.” But getting to the sweet spot can be a difficult writing obstacle. Sometimes I must work for every word, strain for every sentence, and push for every paragraph. One of my favorite ways to overcome the lack of inspiration is to call an older family member. Older family members have a plethora of experiences, and most are willing to share. I ask questions and learn about their lives and my life. These conversations inspire me to write.

3.      What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Authors put in a lot of work and sacrifice a lot of time to share their new book baby with the world. Mistakes are made and lessons are learned. I advised new authors to read often. It will increase your vocabulary and your creativity. You’ll also learn what good writing looks and sounds like.

  1. Tell us about For Such A Time As This – a brief blurb

Keisha Jackson’s peaceful life is about to change!

Her mother receives military orders to Afghanistan. Keisha goes to live with her grandparents in Magnolia, Florida. The new high school principal is far more concerned with protecting her career than protecting innocent students. When Keisha unintentionally breaks the school's zero-tolerance policy, she enters the school-to-prison pipeline.

Will Keisha muddle in the injustice of it all? Or will she become a conduit for change?

  1. Is there one particular message or “moral of the story” you hope readers walk away with?

Yes, I hope readers will understand that God created each of us with a particular purpose in mind. When we find that purpose, and walk in it, we become a blessing to the kingdom.

  1. What one question would you like us to ask your readers?  (this is the one that they answer to win what you’re giving away IF there is a giveaway, if not, ignore.)

Do you know God’s purpose for your life? If so, please share.

  1. Tell us about the giveaway you’re offering. (if there is one)

I am giving away a signed copy of For Such A Time As This.

  1. How did For Such A Time As This get started?

I was invited to speak at a church service in Ringgold, Louisiana a few years back. One of the other speakers was Ms. Daryl Joy Ellis. Her topic was the school-to-prison pipeline. I was surprised to find out that it existed and ashamed that I hadn’t heard about it. The "school-to-prison pipeline," is a troubling national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.

I developed a story around the topic.

  1. How do you see yourself in your character’s story, if at all?

Yes. I’ve experienced a lot of difficult challenges. I’ve done things I’m not so proud of. There are others who are going through the same things that I have been through and overcome. My job is to share with others so they can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. Where do you like to write?

I like to write amongst the clutter at the desk in my home office. But you can also find me with my feet tucked under the covers in my bedroom late at night or at my favorite spot on the couch in the living room.

Ironwood Hamilton, new captain of police in Tinyville VA, is put at odds with his regional police colleagues when a new and confrontational Black newspaper hits them all with a demand for public release of records about police brutality in Lofton County. With the help of one loyal lieutenant and a relative with a famous name and suitably dangerous temperament, Captain Hamilton must gather the clues to a plan for rogue police action that will eventuate in blood and fire

“It used to be 'what's that black and white and read all over?' was a joke told about the newspaper, but every newspaper in the hands of racist reactionaries in the South has indeed been red all over – soaked with the blood of innocent Black people brutalized and slaughtered over lies in print that continue to this day.

“No more will we allow the wholesale placarding of racist tomes about ourselves and our children to pass for news. No more will we not have a voice to raise in challenge. No more shall we, the Black populations of Tinyville, Littleburg, Miniopolis, Smallwood, Shortport, Big Loft, and the rural countryside be passively painted as savages while the real savages sit comfortably in places of law, commerce, and politics. Be it known to all Virginia: those days are over! Hereby understand that the Lofton County Free Voice will roar back at the voices of racist reactionary news, beginning in Tinyville, then across Lofton County, then to the uttermost parts of Virginia!”

Captain Ironwood Hamilton and Lieutenant Patrick O'Reilly of Tinyville's two-man police force stood at the nearest public bulletin board nearest the police station, reading what they had been reading, over and over again, on their regular dawn walk through the town.

The lieutenant was 25 years old, medium height and build, with bright red hair, ruddy skin, green eyes, and a shocking Southern drawl (unless you know the Scotch-Irish history of the southeastern United States).

The captain was 45 years old, six feet tall, sinewy, with iron-gray eyes and hair to match. His features looked like something that those Southern artists who loved to carve Confederates out of marble would have adored – classic, strong features, handsome, calm, and resolute. The slight pinch in those features from the sudden headache the captain was experiencing would of course have been glossed over.

“Wow,” said Lieutenant O'Reilly. “Have ever you read such bombast in all your life, Captain?”

Captain Ironwood Hamilton shook his head slowly, slowly because of the headache that was increasing every second.

“It's only bombast if the Lofton County Free Voice can't do what it says. I rather think it can, or at least can make a gallant effort.”

Lieutenant O'Reilly's green eyes got wide.

“Captain, you're not serious! A Black newspaper? In Lofton County? They won't last a week!”

Captain Hamilton shook his head again and restrained his urge to rub his throbbing temples.

“It's not 1819, and these are not amateurs we are dealing with. Just from this first issue, I know they have a good chunk of money in hand, dedicated people, and good strategic and tactical sense.”
