AUTHOR INTERVIEW #WOMENWHOSOAR #ANTHOLOGY #NEWBOOKALERT #INSPIRATIONAL #NONFICTION #MEMOIR @wnlbooktours

Welcome to Nothing But Books

Today's Featured Author

Dr. Elaine Gattis

1)First, I want to thank you for taking the time out of your very busyschedule to do this interview.  Speaking of your busy schedule, you are one of the authors in the best-selling book Women Who Soar, tell us aboutyourself?
I am Dr. Elaine Gattis, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area. I am an affiliate professor of ministry at Ohio Christian University’s Morrow, Georgia satellite campus. I am also an author and an ordained minister of the Gospel, serving as the Executive Pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Stockbridge, Georgia. Myhusband, Reverend Dr. Terrance Gattis, also serves as the Senior Pastor in the same ministry.  I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from California State University, East Bay, a Master of Divinity degree from the Emory University Candler School of Theology, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.
2) What’s the title of your chapter?
The title of my chapter is “Soaring into Purpose.”
3) Tell us about your chapter?
The crux of my chapter is solidly basedon finding and embracing one’s purpose in Christ.  Everyone’s journey is different and unique, however, when we allow ourselves to be challengedbeyond our fears, insecurities, and the many setbacks we sometimes face, we will find that there is a purpose on the other side of everypain we encounter. While some people are born into what they believe to be their purpose and others discover their purposeat an early age, there are many others who decrythat they don’t know or are yetto discovertheir purpose.  I believe that this is often due to one’s inability to face the fears and giants that stand between them and their purpose, which in turn hinders their vision.  Our giants come in many forms, and minewas in the formof fear (fear of being alone and without the support of my family and friends).  Nevertheless, my faith and trust in God pushed me to take bold steps, face fears and journey to places that I would’ve otherwise never thought possible.  Before I knew it, I was doing more than taking steps. I began to soar into areas that helped me to embrace and further define my ownpurpose which impacted on my growth .  Now, I soar!
4) What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading your chapter?
My prayer is that others will read my chapter and discover that they can soar too.  I pray that others will be empowered and encouraged to move past their biggest fears to embracetheir challenges and move toward deeperand more meaningful lives.  It is importantto know this, andone must understand that it will not be an easyride. However, in the end, the rewards significantly outweigh the challenges.  God is faithful and will never leave nor forsake those who put their trust in the Lord.
5) What inspired you to participate in this anthology?
I was inspired to participate in the Women Who Soar anthology because I knew I had a story to tell that might help someone else spread their wings.  Moreover, I thought it would be an honor to be a part of such a greatproject. I am generally a very private person, and it is not always easy to be transparent and allow the world into one’s personal space. However, the women involved in this project all have very awesome and personal stories to tell and opening myself up to be a part of this was simply another effort at spreading my wings.
6) What’s next for you?
My husband and I started a publishing company last year called Pneuma Enterprises. The sole aim of the firm is to help others through the process of getting their stories published.  We have found that there are so many aspiring writers who don’t know where to begin after writing their story and have thus garnered much interest. I am looking forward to helping others get their stories published as well. Also, I am in the process of writing another non-fiction book about associate ministry.  This next book is pretty much involved and would keep me quite busy butI hope to have it completed by the end of this year.
7) What was the most difficultaspect of writing this chapter?
I know I can tell my story better than anyone else, and so writingthis chapter was not difficult for me at all. Nevertheless, if I had to choose one aspect of difficulty, it would be choosingwhat to leave in and what to take out in order tostay within the word limitations.
8) Why do you write? Is it something you've always done or alwayswanted to do? Oris it something that you started fairly recently?
I have always written quite a lot and knewthat I was pretty good at it.  It was my writing skills that landed me in GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) as a young child.  I went to a predominately white school and was the only African American in the program atthetime.  As an adult,I journaled for several years and always wanted to write and at least get one book published.  Women Who Soar is actuallymy second published book.  My first was written and published academically as my doctoral dissertation butI wanted to write something more mainstream as well.
9) In three words describe your chapter?
Encouraging, inspiring, and motivating.
10) How can people connect with you?
I can be reached by email at elainegattis@gmail.com, on the internet at www.elainegattis.comor via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/elaine.gattis

#VIRTUALBOOKTOUR The Son of God Series by Sharon Lindsay #BIBLICAL #FICTION #INSPIRATIONAL #NEWBOOKALERT @wnlbooktours

Write Now Literary is pleased to be coordinating a blog tour for Sharon Lindsay. This tour will run July 23- Aug 3, 2018.  Book your own tour here.

Genre: Biblical Fiction

The Son of God Series is five books of historical fiction that shine a compelling light on Jesus, the central figure of Christianity. In his heavenly role, he is called Yeshua and as a man he is called Jesus. In each book you will meet Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah. He is personal and approachable.

Sharon Lindsay is a woman who reads the Bible and sees the drama of the ancient stories like vivid movies rolling across her mind. She is the author of the 5-book Son of God Series, a writer who grounds her fast-paced fictionalized account of the life of Jesus in Biblical studies, historical research, and personal experience. Her own experiences, the times when heaven has supernaturally stepped into her life, allow her to write this Biblical story with the authority of someone who has come face to face with the spiritual forces of Good and Evil.

Sharon is a graduate of Washington Adventist University (formerly Columbia Union College). She is a retired teacher with 37 years of classroom experience, elementary through middle school. As a retiree, she continues to teach in the church setting and has found that both adults and teenagers who read The Son of God Series are captivated by her fresh and relatable retelling of the Gospel account. She is an active member of a Messianic Jewish Congregation.

Title of Book: The Son of God Series, Book 1: Unto Us

About The Book

Sets up the power-struggle between God and Satan. The sweet Christmas story? No, this is the story of a young Jewish couple unexpectedly thrust into the cosmic war between Good and Evil. They have been entrusted with the life of heaven’s king and Earth’s savior. How will they survive?

Title of Book: The Son of God Series, Book 2: This is My Son

About The Book

In Book 2, This is My Son the supernatural conflict between Good and Evil continues to focus on the boy Jesus. Satan manipulates people and events but is not allowed to directly attack during Jesus’ developmental years. Throughout this period, the Kingdom of the Evil One continually engineers the circumstances of life hoping to bring confusion, fear and rejection into the life of God’s son, the one chosen to bring salvation to humanity.

When the men of Nazareth become involved with the Galilean, Jesus watches the father of his best friend die on a cross. Through the confusion of those years, Father God and Joseph guide Jesus into his true identity, Son of Heaven and Son of Earth destined to die for humanity.

Title of Book: The Son of God Series, Book 3: Prepare the Way

About The Book

In Book 3, Prepare the Way the major characters in the Biblical narrative are called on stage: John the Baptist, the disciples, Pilate, Herod Antipas and others. The intrigue of Rome clashes with life in a land governed by the Law of Moses. John the Baptist runs afoul of the ruler of Galilee and Pilate must back down after taking a tough stance with the Sanhedrin. In the Judean wilderness Satan tries to end the mission of Jesus before his ministry begins.

In this book, Jesus moves from small-town carpenter to well-known rabbi, scandalously infamous in Jerusalem and faithfully followed in the countryside.

Joanne Otto is a lifelong student of the Bible who has taken four exciting tours of Bible lands and done extensive research, including numerous courses. She has taught foreign languages and English and more recently, as an academic language therapist, has helped dyslexic children strengthen their reading and writing skills. Website: http://joanneotto.com/

                About the Book

The You-Song celebrates, in a way young children can understand, the unique and vital place each of us occupies in God's world and encourages them to fill their place in it with joy. Written by a teacher who's helped many children overcome reading challenges, "The You-Song" is user-friendly, consisting of words that are either familiar or easy to decode. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 50 heart-warming photos, it's also fun to read aloud to pre-readers.

Genre: Juvenile Nonfiction

                                                                                                    About the Book

Daughter of Jerusalem" takes its 21st-century readers on a journey back to the first-century world of a young rabbi named Yeshua—better known to us as Jesus. Mara, the young heroine of this story, gets to mingle with the crowds who come to hear him teach during his visits to Jerusalem and, finally, to meet him face to face in a brief, life-changing encounter—one that comes at no small cost to herself. For middle-grade readers who want to use the book as a springboard for deeper study, there are Bible references and questions on each chapter, as well as a glossary. For others, the story itself will be the full journey.

Genre: Christian Fiction

Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?
I’ve seen myself in lots of different roles—as a teacher of English and foreign languages, as an academic language therapist helping dyslexic children learn reading and writing skills, as an enthusiastic singer and piano accompanist, as an avid student of the Bible, as a wife, mother and grandmother. But until recently I hadn’t envisioned myself as the author of a book.
Why do you think it took so long for the idea of writing a book to take hold?
Even though I’ve enjoyed writing and took several excellent writing courses early on, I made the mistake of thinking of writing too much as a personal accomplishment rather than simply enjoying the process of being a channel for the ideas that were coming to me. So when an essay and a short story I’d submitted for publication met with a negative response—or no response at all!—I let myself become discouraged.
There were other reasons as well. I was preoccupied with raising children. More importantly, I hadn’t yet had the life experiences that prepared me to write these books. And from a purely practical standpoint, an independent route to first-time authorship has not been available until relatively recently.
How does it feel to you to be a published author?
A bit like sending the children you’ve loved and nurtured off to school for the first time! My books are my babies, and, like most mothers, I delighted in the early stages of their development. They often surprised me in the amazing process of becoming what they were meant to be.
But the time inevitably came when, if they were to fulfill their purpose, those “babies” had to be released into the big wide world, where others might or might not approve of them. Perhaps the most difficult step I took in launching them was to send them to KirkusReviews for an unbiased assessment of their merit. The day I found those reviews in my email was one for celebration. My babies had passed the test with flying colors!
Why have you decided to republish the books five years after they first came out?
So that they can bless a wider audience. It’s been enjoyable getting enthusiastic feedback from friends and acquaintances who’ve read them, but outside my circle of acquaintance, they’ve been reaching relatively few readers. When I heard that LaShawn Dobbs of Divine Purpose Publishing had expressed an interest in them, I felt the door was opening to a divinely provided opportunity to make them accessible to more people.
Are you currently working on another book?
Not at present. My books weren’t written because I wanted to become an author. They both seemed to have a life beyond me. It felt as if I were being demandedto write them—as if my own purpose could not be fulfilled withoutwriting them. Unless another book comes to my thought as a clear imperative, these two may end up being my only book “babies.” Time will tell. But meanwhile I’ve enjoyed writing essays and poetry. Writing is always important to me as a way of processing ideas.

#VIRTUALBOOKTOUR #NEWBOOKALERT #NEWBOOKRELEASE Enduring Love by Danyelle Scroggins #CHRISTIAN #FICTION #ROMANCE @wnlbooktours

This is one of my tour stops during my one week tour for Enduring Love by Danyelle Scroggins. This virtual book tour is organized by Write Now Literary Book Tours. This tour runs April 23-28, 2018. Book your own tour here WNL.

Enduring Love

Genre: Christian Fiction

Publication date: March 16, 2018

ASIN: B07B8X7RVY

No one ever truly realizes the power of their love, until love is tested and they have to endure things unimaginable and sometimes hurtful. And if the truth is declared, no one wants to but…
Sometimes we find ourselves standing in the test of love and this is exactly where Priscilla Marshall finds herself. Married to Steven since she graduated college, together they were the perfect couple. Both making successful business moves, both loved their choices, but one had a secret that could change their lives.
Priscilla, now forced to make a plan to secure her future, finds out that a plan without God involved is not a plan at all because “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21). What will God use to make this woman’s plan come full circle with His own, and after the test, will they find that they truly do have an Enduring Love?

About the Author

Danyelle is the Senior Pastor of New Vessels Ministries North in Shreveport, Louisiana, who is a dynamic author of both Christian fiction and non-fiction books. She studied Theology at Louisiana Baptist University, has a Psychology Degree from the University of Phoenix, an Interdisciplinary Degree in Psychology /Biblical Studies, and a Master’s in Religious Education from the Liberty University. She owns Divinely Sown Publishing LLC and is an avid reader. She is the wife of Pastor Reynard Scroggins and the mother of three.

Priscilla reasoned why God would choose her to be the carrier of life. Married for almost fifteen years, sexual pleasures only happened on special occasions. Often without romance, and starting with a touch here, feel there, and a real quick release on his part. The thought of making a baby vanished long ago.

In reality, indecisiveness plagued her like a severe toothache regarding being a wife or instead, being his wife. Her mind and ambitions settled on being the audacious executive she fancied herself. Relinquishing all thoughts of motherhood, that were now nowhere in the plan.
Many are the plans of man…but it is the Lord’s plans that prevail.
Dr. Thorpe’s private practice became her haven, the place where swift answers and solutions to her most pressing issues materialized. Today, he acted as the grim reaper delivering death-blows instead of solutions. Death to her plans, dreams, and her one hundred and thirty-five-pound figure. She worked hard for her body, and to destroy it for a child neither of them wanted put her in a complete stupor.

As she sat in a makeshift gown barely covering her breasts, Priscilla sighed. Moving to get more comfortable on the green leather table-bed covered with a sheet of wrinkled white paper, she felt hopeless. Priscilla swung her legs as though they could propel her into another space in time. She took a deep breath. Lumps in her throat seemed to suffocate her and caused her to give in to the explosive stream of tears cascading down her face.

How am I going to care for a child in the midst of running a company? Marshall’s Mortgage a premier mortgage company and her baby, her purpose that bequeathed her employees who became family. A creative concept and idea birthed right after leaving college with a degree in accounting and nourished with intensity and integrity. The thought of leaving it with anyone for more than a day or two frightened her. Because of this baby, she would have no choice.

“Priscilla? Are you alright?” Dr. Thorpe inquired.

Startled by his voice and still confused, she hadn’t noticed his return. “Dr. Thorpe, I’m not alright. This pregnancy is so unexpected. I thought maybe the flu or a virus. But this? I took a darn pill every day since Steven and I married. They’re supposed to prevent this. I don’t understand how it could happen,” she responded with a pant and sniffle between words.
“I’ve been an OB doctor for well over twenty years, and I promise I see women who swear they took their birth-control pill on time and still got pregnant. I know you are quite familiar with God and His work. And, I consider us close friends so I can say this.”
Priscilla nodded.

“No matter what and how we try, we can never abort the plans of God. He knows this child is going to gain a complete knowledge of Him. The Father chose you and Steven to protect, nurture, and train him or her in the way they should go. Priscilla instead of the questions why and how be excited, and grateful God chose you.”

“I don’t feel like this is something I want to do. I don’t even know if I can do it.”

The Advice I Would Give To A First Time Author or Someone Desiring To Be An Author

The First advice I would give to a first-time author is: Live In Your Own Pen.

There’s no denying the fact that from the very beginning of my writing career every publishing house that turned me down but decided to critique my writing said: It’s too religious.
So, imagine writing books but walking a tightrope trying not to be too religious, when your religion is a huge part of who you are. I had
so many bald up sheets of paper on my floor, “just quit” moments and far too many tearful nights. The writing was a part of me! But critics had somehow invaded my pen, and now I was no longer writing for the love of sharing but trying to impress a reader who just might feel like the critics.
Then one day, it hit me. Out of what I know was not the clear blue I heard...
“You write because of who you are as a pastor!”
So, I immediately penned on paper the things I am trying to accomplish as a pastor:
  1. Convince someone that Jesus is Lord,
  2. Encourage someone,
  3. Teach the Gospel, and
  4. Spread love.
There it was right before me...the guide to living in my own pen. Once I embraced this wholeheartedly, I got excited about writing again.
It no longer mattered if I’d lose a reader because my message was too preachy. Or that my books sold better at churches than on Amazon. The only thing that mattered was that I was now comfortable in my own pen. No longer trying to write like Victoria Christopher, Brenda Jackson, or Eva Miles, who I feel are all great. But now, I was going to write like Danyelle Scroggins who I know is climbing to be just like these women.

I had a new mission; a new goal...To live in my own pen and enjoy the journey.

The Second Advice I would give is: Learn How To Be Disciplined.

Discipline is beneficial when it comes to being a writer. Why? No one is looking over your shoulder telling you, “Get to it.” It is like having a job where no one is standing over you or making sure, you are working as hard as you should be. You are it; The boss, the supervisor, and the employee.

You have to make up in your mind that your writing is worth your time!
I would definitely be the first to admit (hiding my face in shame), my first book took me over two years to write. It was a seventy-page book written by someone with a pipe dream and no discipline.

I often tell people who ask me, “Do you think I can be a writer?” “Yes, but you must have discipline.”
Being a writer is a craft that putting your priorities in line. You have to discover if writing going to be a full-time adventure or a part-time play event. You also have to decide if it is worth all or most of your social time. There are times when I want to hang out with friends, but because my characters are so disciplined in letting me into their lives, I have to be readily available to explore their stories. You must determine if you are willing to give it the discipline and time it demands, while at the same time meeting the needs of those you are connected to like your family.

You may be an author who is struggling to try to figure out just what your pen is. Do not become overwhelmed or quit. Write from your heart and remember no man knows the heart...only God! Ask God to give you a glimpse into the depths of your heart and pull from what is within. The pen you are in should be just as comfortable as the skin you’re in.

You may also desire to be an author but are not fully aware of what it takes. Talk to some authors. Facebook is a great place to connect with some of the best authors I know. Most of them will even take the time to mentor you in small email messages. You would be surprised at how many authors have readers who are now considered their friend. Don’t be afraid to ask. The Bible says, “You have not because you ask not.” And everything in me believes this includes information. If you discipline yourself to make connections, some of the connections you make will open the door to understanding what it takes to be a disciplined writer.
