Excerpt

Nikiya “Nikki” Barnett
Nikiya Barnett, known to shop patrons and friends as Nikki, was eager to tune in to RFRT with Sister Sappora Ink. The blog talk show previewed for the first time the past week, rating high and considered a hit by reviewers. As far as Nikki was concerned, the world needed someone who would tell the truth, live the truth, and share the truth, even if it were a blog talk show host.

As explained, Sister Ink answered questions about relationships, and although honest, she was raw. Against her will, Nikki listened to blog talk shows often blaming the desire to be a good best friend for this phenomenon. A couple of them were worth listening to, but some were uninformative and a useless waste of time. The hosts were inexperienced or too pretentious to explain life’s circumstances with realness and clarity. They failed to solve problems or share foundational truths from the Gospels, as Chelle declared Sister Ink did.
For the first time, Nikki’s curiosity about a show’s review ignited interest and Nikki refused to miss it. Intent on judging for herself perhaps sparked the motivation. It may also have been the desire to understand how she lost the love or her life or the need for spiritual advice. Either way, Nikki would be in the front of the computer, with an open mind centered on Sis. Ink.

The only dilemma was making it home on time. Nikki’s solution may not have been perfect but it was plausible. She drove 85 in and 70 mph zone, praying the angels would blind the police. The inability to afford another speeding ticket should have detoured Nikki from breaking the law, not to mention how dumb it would be to get a ticket resulting from rushing to hear a talk show, but it didn’t. With long hair weave blowing, as the wind whipped through the windows of the car, Nikki uncaring and unconcerned bobbed and sang along with the music. We are conquerors, conquerors.

Driving fast, the “zooming” of the other passing vehicles warranted a rear view mirror check. Dang Nikki! The thought was not a result of a police approaching, but the reality of looking at a calescent mess. Nikki snickered, but noticed the children in the car to the left laughing and pointing their fingers. Nikki licked at the children and then sped past them.

Keys to Extraordinary Success for Ordinary People

About The Author

Nekesa Ouma-Namulu describes herself as a 'true citizen of the world,' having the privilege of calling many places home. She was born and brought up in Nairobi, the capital of that picturesque nation on Africa's eastern coast, and moved to London where marriage and career made Europe her second home for almost two decades. Her career as a Computer Networking Systems consultant, which included a year with Cisco Systems, saw her spend many happy hours in data centres all over the world, fiddling with fibre-optic cables plugged to huge data switches alight with dozens of different blinking lights. Work saw her set up camp in Mexico City, Seoul and most recently Paris, which led her to conclude, "no-one does a strike quite so thoroughly as the French." Nekesa has published a computing book, which sits happily next to others in UK libraries, as well as a children's fable. Today, Nekesa and her family split time between homes in Kenya, Spain and the UK.

About The Book

Asami, Bonita, Morgan, and Sienna have shared everything including their laughter and tears. No matter the challenge, they always emerged stronger with their friendship intact. No one ever expected that they would be tested again so severely.
These women soon learn that although life brings its share of storms, it’s what they do in the midst of those storms that define their character. While navigating the worst storms of their lives, these captivating women discover the true meaning of friendship, faith, and family.
What will they do when faced with devastating life situations that shake the very foundation that their lives are built upon? Follow this group of audacious women as they stare down the most tumultuous year they have ever had to face.

Character Interview

Q. Please tell the readers who are the main characters?

Shades of Brown revolves around four main characters; Asami, Bonita, Morgan, and Si-enna.

Q. What or is there conflict in the story?

Shades of Brown is about four women who face some pretty incredible challenges and how they face and overcome these challenges. There is a ton of conflict throughout the book. These women face things like health concerns, fertility issues, and marital strug-gles; their very faith is shaken.

Q. Which characters in “are you most like?

I think there’s a bit of me in all four characters, but if I had to choose one of the four that I can relate to most is Morgan. She loves her family and keeps them in the forefront of her mind. She lives for the happiness and wellbeing of her children and always strives to be a good wife to her husband. Morgan gets caught up in being all things to all peo-ple and sort of forgets to take care of herself; she’s last on her list of things to do.

Q. Take us inside “your book” What are two major events taking place?

There is a lot going on within the pages of Shades of Brown, but there are a couple of major life events that stand out for me here. The first is the completely life altering health concerns that a couple of the characters face. I think most of us take things like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension for granted because they’re so common place now, but these decreases among others are life threatening, life altering deceases that should be taken seriously. Second, my characters come to a point in their lives where they’re shifting gears and starting over. They’re changing careers and starting families; these are major life events that cause them to sort of do a 360 degree turn and start life over again.

Q. Are your characters from the portrayal of real people?

They are. I see these characters in my own circle of sister friends. I have a people in my life who are comforters like Morgan is, quiet strength and innocence like Asami, No nonsense fire like Bonita, and the voice of reason like Sienna. They all bring something different to the table but whatever they bring is welcome, respected, and valued.

Q. Describe each character in three words?

In three words: Asami is sweet, sensitive, and strong; Bonita is audacious, creative, strong; Morgan is loving, nurturing, strong; Sienna is protective, wise, strong. Yes, I used strong to describe all of these women because at the end of the day, they all show the strength and fortitude God has given them.

Delmar is the Author of the newly released book Seasons of My Soul: Lessons Learned in a Dry Place and co-author of The Power of Collaboration in Business, she has been featured in The Working Mother Magazine, The Business 101 Magazine, and The Little Pink Book Magazine; and featured on the Black Butterfly Media TV and Blog Talk Radio.

Tell us about your book?

Seasons of My Soul is about overcoming and having the tenacity to keep moving forward, even at times when I felt there was little hope to get through being unstuck, struggling with depression, toxic relationships and financial failures. It speaks of the lessons I learned as I got on the other side of each of those experiences and pass any shame or embarrassment that was illuminated in my own mind.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

It all came from me journaling for so many years and I saw writing this book as another way of journaling; only this time I allowed others to join me along the ride with more intimate details of what was in my mind, heart and soul as I journeyed through times in my life that had a significant impact.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

I found the most difficult part of writing the book was remembering the parts that left emotional and mental scars. Going back to some experiences had me right back in the moment as though it was happening in that moment of writing about it. However once it was written down it no longer held any power.

Why do you write?

Writing for me has always been therapeutic. I've been writing by way of journaling thoughts for more than 15 years. And I picked up that habit once I moved out of town from my family and friends to pursue my career.

Who are your favorite authors?

I actually don't have a particular favorite author, however I do like books written from a spiritual, personal and professional development point of view, and some of those authors from that genre that I enjoy include, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyers, John Maxwell, and Rick Warren; also, Napoleon Hill, Jay Levinson,
Steven Covey

What books have most influenced your life most?

Besides the Bible, I would say, Battlefield of The Mind by Joyce Meyers, Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren No Matter What by Lisa Nichols, and Repositioning by TD Jakes
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

If I had to choose, it would be TD Jakes, because I enjoy how he pulls the spiritual and real life matters together, creating a visual picture of what he talks about and how it resonates with the reader within as you apply the principles and lessons in your own life.
What book are you reading now?

I am currently reading Instinct: The Power to Unleash Your Inborn Drive by T.D. Jakes and I Declare: 31 Promises to Speak Over Your Life by Joel Osteen

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?

The lessons I believe readers will be able to take from this book is, (1) that you don't have to stay in the place in which you have fallen, (2) that there is absolute power in forgiving and letting go
of past hurts, and (3) that it's important to surround yourself with people that support you to renew within you a sense of hope

Any advice to give to aspiring writers?

To not give up and get organized. Write by creating some structure around it including, writing an outline of thoughts, use color note-cards of the potential topics and what points you want to write about each point, schedule your writing time and stick to it. Additionally, begin building a platform prior to finishing and
launching your book; this helps to create momentum among your current and potential audience.

Don't Look Back, Look Forward, by Tinnie Garlington Virtual Book Tour #NEWRELEASE #NONFICTION #DontLookBack

About the Author

Born and raised in Atlanta GA Tinnie Garlington has always had a passion for teaching. At preschool age Tinnie would tell the class "don't listen to the teacher, listen to me". As she grew older "life" happened and she became a mother at the age of 14. Even though she traveled from school to school, living with anyone who would take her in, she never gave up on learning. Through those experiences she began to write in notebooks about how she was feeling and in some cases make up stories so that she could escape her reality. A high school drop out with no one to turn to but God, she decided at the age of 20 to go back to school to obtain her GED. Times were still tough, but she made it. Shortly after graduating from Atlanta Job Corps, she decided to attend GMI Georgia Medical Institute for her certification as a Medical Administrative Assistant. The journey was still bumpy, but through her will to succeed, she graduated with honors.
Now the Atlanta born "Grady Baby" Tinnie C. Garlington has embarked on her passion to motivate and encourage individuals to see beyond their past. Don't Look Back, Look Forward was birthed from a dark place. Tinnie discovered healing through writing and wrote poetry and plays, yet was too afraid to move forward on her dreams to use this material to teach and encourage others. Well, a close friend and her mother encouraged Tinnie to stop being afraid of the greatness that was inside of her and act on what God has given her. Through that tough love and confirmation, this small yet powerful book was pulled from her personal library and now the world can share in the thoughts hidden in her heart.

Her hopes is that her first book titled "Don't Look Back, Look Forward" will capture the attention of those who are looking for a way forward and encourage them to never give up and allow the hard times to serve as a solid foundation for growth and a positive future.

Author Tinnie, tell us about your book?

Don't Look Back, Look Forward is a book that was written during a time that I was not so sure about the direction that my life was headed. I can recall having these questions and being too afraid to discover the answer. One day I decided to sit down and write down those questions and answer them honestly and without thinking about what to say or how to say it. This book is a combination of my thoughts and pieces of poetry that comes straight from my heart.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

The idea for this book came from people telling me that my poetry is powerful and very inspiring. Also, I have a passion for teaching others and I felt that this book could serve as a teaching tool for many people as well as organizations. It is my goal to develop courses that surround this book. The courses will assist people with reconnecting with their passion and finding a way to move beyond anything that tries to keep them from moving to the next level.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

The most difficult aspect of writing this book was going back in the past and really facing the reality of what I went through and how it made me feel. Reconnecting with the past causes you to feel those same emotions that you felt as if it was happing at that very moment. However, I found strength in reconnecting and knowing that allowing myself to see what I was hiding from was not so bad. It was my stepping stone to greatness!!!
Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently?

I write for therapy and a way to express what is hidden away in my heart. I write so that my legacy can live on and others who have experienced or will unfortunately experience what I have gone through will find my book as a resource for strength.

Who are your favorite authors?

My favorite authors are Bishop TD Jakes, Terry McMillian, John Maxwell, Sista Souljah, and Langston Hughes.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?

The valuable lessons that I would like for my readers to learn is the power of REVEALING. I would like for my readers to remember a quote that I came across during an interview that states "People and things are powerless, your reaction is their only power" by an unknown author. I want them to understand their power to look forward to greatness and know that its okay to not look back.

Any advice to give to aspiring writers?

If I had to give advice to aspiring authors I would tell them to look beyond fear, rejection, or doubt and just be in the moment. Try hard to not be distracted by anything. Do not allow people to contaminate them with their opinions and thoughts. Write from the heart and be present with your feelings. The best work is work that comes from the heart.

About The Book

When life throws a challenge, throw one back. Don't Look Back, Look Forward is a mini book that packs a powerful punch. Author Tinnie Garlington allows you to take a peek into her inner most thoughts and she provides you with her insight on those questions that can sometime keep you from pursuing your passions or moving to the next level. This book inspires you to reconnect with your passion that you may have either suppressed or fear is trying to rob you of. Your life will not be the same when you take this journey and discover the benefits of Looking Forward.

Teaser
Chris Kline’s eyes fluttered open and he saw only darkness. He was lying on a
cold, hard ground—concrete, he thought, naked—no wait, not naked. He still had his boxer briefs on. He sat up and as he did, a wave of unsteadiness came over him. Whoa. He shook his head, trying to clear cobwebs, and when his equilibrium
settled enough, he tried to stand, but couldn’t because of a manacle fastened around his right ankle. He shivered.

Where am I?
What’s going on?
Think, Chris. Think!

About The Author

Dwayne S. Joseph began his writing career at the age of thirteen. Commandeering his parent's computer, he sat for hours on end creating dramatic stories of fiction that earned him the "best story teller in the Joseph household" moniker. He then went on to win second place in the National Scholastic Writing Competition during his senior year in high school, for a short story he wrote, titled "Playtime" (A story that he does plan to develop into a children's tale someday soon!) The novels at thirteen and the short story in his senior year all helped to propel him on the destined path to becoming a published author at the age of 27, with the release of his first novel The Choices Men Make.

About The Book

Pink and Patent Leather, Sasha “Pink” Jansen has heard the voice of God. He spoke loud and clear at her purity ceremony, when she was just sixteen years old and Pastor Malik Stroman placed that ring on her finger. And He was just as clear when He told her that purity ring would someday be replaced with a wedding ring from the same man . . . all Pink had to do was save herself. Dreams of a life with Pastor Malik were enough to keep the privileged princess committed to her vow, dodging all kinds of temptation, resisting every romance, and the whole time, keeping her eyes on the prize –the day she would become first lady. There’s just one problem - Pastor Malik already has a wife. But Pink is accustomed to getting what she wants - by any means necessary. With her grace and virtue on the line - and what she thinks is God’s word in her head - Pink is on a mission no one understands. She’s determined to show Pastor Malik that they belong together – and come hell or high water, she plans to get the good reverend to agree. Candy Jackson has penned a page-turning tale of one-woman’s quest for love and the spiraling descent she’ll take to get it.

Teaser….
It had been a long time, four years to be exact, but I was ready. The night I had been dreaming about was finally here. My life was playing out like a well-rehearsed script, and I had the starring role.
I wanted a life with him.
It was my time; sweet victory was in the air.
I was Sasha Simone Jansen and I had come to win.
Now, as I sat at my vanity poised and proper with my hair done and make-up flawless, I stared at my perfect cocoa complexion and
smiled. I had to be the luckiest girl in the world. No, that wasn’t it. I’m a Christian, and we don’t believe in luck

Nothing would be the same again. That I knew for sure, though the uncertainty of what exactly that meant sloshed inside of me as I unlocked the door to my office and quietly asked my mother for guidance.
Instantaneously, a peace settled in my soul, just
as I knew it would; but the question marks still pricked at my brain.
Three hours later, my secretary alerted me via the intercom that I had a phone call and the feelings of unrest surged again. I
pushed the Talk button.
“Kingston speaking,” I said.
“Job well done, Kingston.

About The Book

Shar Gracey wants nothing more than to sing the Lord’s praises, so she jumps at the chance to join a traveling choir led by the father of black gospel music, Thomas A. Dorsey. Better yet, the opportunity will give her money to pay for her ailing mother’s medical care.

While on tour she falls under the tutelage of gospel great Mahalia Jackson—and falls for the handsome but not-so-great Nicoli James, whose desires for Shar are fueled by his own greed. Shar would do anything for Nicoli—and he knows it—so when his life is threatened after a night of gambling, Shar agrees to help pay Nicoli’s debt, only to have her faith and dreams shattered.

Reeling from the betrayal, Shar loses her voice and she believes that she will never sing again. She has no place to run except back home to her seriously ill mother—and the man she left behind, who would move heaven and earth to make Shar’s pain go away. Even if it means he has to let her go . . . again.
