Featuring Authors Julie Morris & Sarah Cherry

Laugh your way to a lighter you! Have fun with your friends and family while you lose the weight and the worries that weigh you down.  Guided By Him is light, easy and filled with humor, but its life-changing ideas are profound.

You and your daughter have designed a light and easy Christian weight-loss program called Guided By Him. How can losing weight be “light and easy”?

We’ve discovered wonderful tools that make losing weight lighter and easier and we share them in Guided By Him (www.guidedbyhim.com). Guided By Him is fun—and it’s funny. For example, some of our chapter titles are “Is Fudge My Fortress?” “Are Donuts my Bread of Life?” and “Do Broken Cookies Count?” You can work the program alone just by buying the book, but it’s much more fun to do it in a group—getting together with others who want to lose weight so you can laugh together and encourage each other.

Where did you learn how to help people to lose weight

I learned the hard way! I started dieting at age 8 and finally lost my weight at age 38 when I realized that diets don’t work. (It “only” took me 30 years to figure that out!) I had been hunting for the best way to lose weight—not realizing that it was sitting on my bedside table all along. The Bible offers amazing weight-loss instructions, and when I began applying them, I lost my harmful extra pounds and immediately began helping others to lose theirs.

Why did you write the book?

A few years after I lost my weight, I wrote 9 books published by Abingdon Press in the Step Forward weight-loss series (www.stepforwarddiet.com) to help Christians to lose weight as I have--relying on God’s power instead of will power. Step Forward is a great program and is helping many people across the country and even in some foreign countries as well. But for several years my daughter Sarah Morris Cherry (a Licensed Professional Counselor) and I had been discussing how busy all of us are and how overwhelming it can be to try to lose weight, when we’re already stressed out. That’s what led us to design a light and easy weight-loss program that busy people can do by themselves or in a group setting. Guided By Him helps them to lose weight “the light-hearted way.”

What do you hope this book accomplishes?

We have received e-mails from Austria to Australia confirming that Guided By Him has done what we prayed it would: lead readers to a thinner, no-so stressed-out lifestyle. Most of them say that, as a result of working the program, they have lost weight and gained a closer relationship with the Lord. Most also say that they have learned how to deal with stress better, pray more effectively and apply the Bible to their lives. In other words, they have learned how to be “guided by Him”!

Who (or what) is your greatest encourager when you write and why?

Our readers are! Nothing brings us more joy than to see their lives change like our have. So many of them have lost their weight, grown in faith and seen God change their misery to ministry as a result of working the GBH program.

How can readers connect with you

We will send a copy of Guided By Him to someone who makes the most interesting comment on this post.

Virtual Book Tour for Elizabeth L. Chalker

About the Book
Foreword by Pastor Charles Carrin and Dr. Corey Cameron

You—one person—an individual, can literally change this whole world with love. By focusing on love, making a choice to love, feeding all that is positive, good, and of the light with exuberance and abundance instead of feeding the negative and evil things of the darkness. You can literally change the world and yourself. One relationship--one interaction--one decision at a time.

If you are experiencing the dark night of the soul in affliction year after year, it will present you, as it has me, with opportunities not found in most other life circumstances.

This is a life story of being in the fire, where I currently remain, where my heart for the Lord has become increasingly insatiable. A deepened intimacy has developed and continues to grow even through this very moment, and will continue beyond. As you read, this is my hope and prayer for you as well.

Despite the impossibilities and suffering with no promise for an end, Elizabeth's faith remains..."

About The Author

Elizabeth Chalker is still in the furnace of life’s' calamities and fighting the good fight of faith and endurance, keeping her eyes on the prize of heaven. Before serious, physical illness devastated her body, Elizabeth was on the fast track as a successful psychologist and addictions specialist, working with violent juvenile offenders and their families, near completion of her third graduate degree. Her life is a testimony of faith that is steadfast and remains no matter the seemingly dark, unjust, and treacherous circumstances of life. She resides in Lighthouse Point, Florida. Elizabeth continues to minister to those in need and aspires to show God's glory through every breath she takes. This is a real life story of being in the fire, where I currently remain, where my heart for the Lord has become increasingly insatiable. A deepened intimacy has developed and continues to grow even through this very moment, and will continue beyond. As you read, this is my hope and prayer for you as well.

Book Review

JORJA DAVIS: "Elizabeth Chalker suffers from late stage lyme disease, probably fatal, offering nothing but a slow, agonizing death. Lyme disease is complicated and compounded by other serious health issues that have left her bedridden and mostly alone. In this roaring furnace where she experiences daily frustration, unbearable pain, and, like Job, unjustifiable suffering, she has found the way to walk with unbound faith and trust in God.

In her book, I was at first witness, but soon became her companion, experiencing through my own chronic pain such wonder at her passionate love and unquenchable thirst for God. I have lived eighteen years with chronic pain. At times, her cries to God for deliverance were so intense I had to stop reading.

The book had somehow become not only Chalker’s story, but mine, as well. I had to stand in awe like King Nebuchadnezzar, “It is my privilege to report to you the gracious miracles that the High God has done for me. His miracles are staggering, his wonders are surprising, His kingdom lasts and lasts, his sovereign rule goes on forever.” *

If you are hurting, crying out in anger or fear, or if you know someone who seems to be weighed down with their hurts and their needs, Hanging on by the Scratch Marks My Nails Left Behind has a place on your shelf beside C. S. Lewis’s The Problem of Pain and Philip Yancey’s Where Is God When It Hurts? It is a terrible, dark place that can only be lit by God's grace in all the ways it comes."
