The Teacher Who Didn’t Want to Go to School

Praise for the Book

"Tia has done it again. Great fun reading this and talking it through with little ones. The art is fun just to look at, the words are fun to read and even more fun to read aloud. If you like reading to or teaching reading to little ones, this is a great addition to any collection."

"If you have raised a three-year-old or spent any amount of time with one, you'll be nodding your head in recognition as you turn the pages of this on-the-spot book by Tia Perkin. The youngster in this book is a dynamo with no let up from sun up to sun down. Up at 6:30 wanting breakfast, getting dressed by himself, making a commotion in the grocery, fighting nap time, potty then no potty, need a drink of water, want cheese, want grapes, playing pirate - and on and on and on until to mom's relief he's asleep.

This is a fun little book for parent and child alike with its zany, expressive graphics and three-year-old antics."

"This is the perfect follow up to Two! It's is more in depth than Two! while having the same fun rhyming story as the first one. As always, the art is top notch! Must buy for anyone who wants a fun entertaining read for their toddler."

Message From The Author: Elsa Takaoka

Elsa Takaoka, Author

On the first day of National Poetry Month in April of 2014, I set the goal of writing a poem a day. My little girls and I would sit at the kitchen table - my five year-old doodled and my one year-old scribbled while Mommy wrote. As I struggled to find inspiration, I would occasionally glance at my eldest girl, who has been a doodling machine since the age of two and will often draw pictures for hours. Her doodles contained many of her favorite things: twins and mermaids, princesses and pets. But on closer inspection, they also contained stories of brave and bold little girls -girls with real feelings who fought, made-up, cried and got angry. These girls sailed ships, fought beasts and were pirates. These girls were tender and caring, who doodled and read. Her art contained REAL little girls- imaginative, clever and able to do anything they set their minds to. My hope is that I was able to crawl into the mind of a child and bottle up even a bit of the innocent yet powerful confidence of clever little girls everywhere.

Book Review

What a delightful book. Graceful Gabby got her name with the lessons in this well put together book. A little girl learns the value of love as she is taught by her grandmother. I believe every little girl an well as the parents would love reading about Grace. The author brings the lesson in full circle when she incorporates the principles of the fruit of the spirit into the lesson. Grad a copy. Your little girl will fall in love with Gabby.

Ten years in the making, The First Children of Farmington series of early reader books has finally reached book sellers. I spent two years researching and writing this series. Several years after I worked with other community historians to collect and record our early pioneer history, I realized that we had quite a diverse ethnicity to Farmington, Wisconsin. Although these stories are based on real people and real events, they are representative of issues and struggles and joys families face every day everywhere.

The Potawatomi Boy is a character with a running thread through all the books. When I first started out with the project I was taking classes from the Christian Writers Guild. I set out to put together a series of picture books and connected with a couple of different artists. I wrote the text, but learned over several years that it’s harder to get the attention of a publisher for children’s books than it is for adult books. I’d never considered self-publishing, but through connections with my current illustrator and publishing partner, Brenda Hendricks, and others at the John 316 Marketing Network, learned a lot about not only self-publishing options, but how to publish well. The second book in the series, The German Girl, is now available, as well, about a curious young girl who becomes lost while searching for the family cow, and the third book, The Saxon Boy, about a young boy who must learn to accept a stepfather, may be out by Christmas. I was quite surprised and pleased to have won a prestigious Jade Ring award for the Saxon Boy from the Wisconsin Writers Association. The other three stories, The Yankee Boy, The Irish Girl and The French Girl, are planned for release in 2014.

The books include references, glossaries, and special illustrations and a picture search. They are suitable for early to middle grades, ages 7-9 or so.

Also at Barnes and Noble
Booksamillion

From December 1 through December 16, the John 3:16 Marketing Network is hosting a Christmas Book Launch and The Potawatomi Boy is a featured book. As part of the event, the Network is offering a $200 Amazon gift certificate to one lucky winner. For a chance to win, go to http://bit.ly/Christian_Books and enter the Rafflecopter toward the bottom of the page.

Sample interview:
1) Please tell us a bit about Fairy May.

Fairy May is a rhyming children's picture story book about a fairy called May that dreams of one day becoming a tooth fairy. She struggles at school and always seems to get things wrong but with hard work and determination she prepares for her tooth fairy exam.

2) What lessons does this book carry for the reader?

The story carries two main lessons for the reader;

A. To follow your dreams. Just because it isn't easy doesn't mean it can't be achieved.

" But Fairy May tried and tried for she had a special dream;
one day she'd be a tooth fairy, the best you've ever seen."

B. The importance of dental hygiene. The text subtly introduces the reader to how to take care of their teeth correctly.

"She learnt how to brush and keep teeth clean
and how to floss right in between."

3) What was your inspiration for this book?

This book is dedicated to my niece who, after seeing that my last book Out and About at the Zoo was dedicated to my two sons, asked if I'd write a book for her too.
It needed to have fairies in it and so I brainstormed on ideas and came up with Fairy May. I wanted her to be a little girl fairy and to show that it's OK to not be perfect. I wanted young children to be able to relate to her and to encourage them to go after their dreams.
The tooth fairy part came about because several of my 5 year old's friends have recently lost their first tooth and he has been full of questions on the subject. My 17 month old is also teething at the moment and so the topic of dental hygiene comes up a lot in our house at the moment.
4) What did you learn while writing Fairy May?
The importance of having the right direction for my story not just a good text. In the original version the text worked fine as a story and rhymed nicely but the overall message wasn't as strong. After rewriting the last part I was much happier with the focus of the story. Simple changes can make a big difference.
5) What projects are you working on now?
I'm busy with several projects at the moment. "The Bedtime Book" which is another rhyming children's picture book. "The Writers and Authors Guide to Social Media" and "Virtual Book Tours" which are two non-fiction books. 2013 is going to be a busy year for me as I have lots of other ideas too.

Are you sold out for Christ? Would you do anything He asks you to do? Many people believe they are living fully surrendered lives to God, but when the worries of this world start to crowd in, they cry out in frustration and anger instead of bowing before Him and saying, “Thy will be done.”

But what does Jesus say about this? How did He lay down His life so willingly? By following the lives of Jesus, His mother Mary, and the apostles, we can discover what true surrender is all about.

Based on the award-winning novel Come to Me, Learning from the Master follows the life of Christ, from birth to resurrection. Each chapter in the study will take you through the book Come to Me, giving you the opportunity to know Jesus in an intimate setting as He interacts with His family and friends. From there, the study takes the reader through various topics such as: faith, family, trust, doubt, and even wilderness experiences. In addition, other topics of discussion include the significance of the Bethlehem star, the last supper and of course the resurrection.

With over twenty topics of discussion, Learning from the Master: Living a Surrendered Life, is ideal for your ladies bible study group, or for private study. Each topic leaves the reader with a clear understanding of how to live a fully surrendered life.

“Embracing the fullness of life means accepting the truth to find that life. Laura has captured the essence of pursing and getting hold of that truth from our Master, Jesus Christ. The beauty in this study guide, is that Laura guides us along a rich journey of discovery through the tender  and loving eyes of Jesus’ mother, Mary. Learning from the Master is rich with compassion; but chock full of challenges and wisdom. Be prepared to be transformed.”
– Heidi McLaughlin, Author of Sand to Pearls

Learning from the Master will guide those who read it into a deeper understanding of what it means to live a surrendered life.”
 – Rick Larson, Creator of The Star of Bethlehem DVD
