From Trust-less to Trustworthy - By: Yvette Wilson Bentley

"When I looked at my friendships with women and why I didn’t trust them, I realized that I had lots to unpack and examine. I was okay not trusting women, but I knew that living as a Christian meant that my attitude and mindset had to change. Was it something that I wanted to do? At first, absolutely not! But I knew that to be of service to God and His people, a change had to be made, so I became willing to be willing. "

Back At One - By: Kendy Ward

“God, You promised that if I served You, followed You with every fiber of my being, then You would restore my family. It’s been five years. I don’t doubt that You can do anything. You specialize in the impossible, but my faith is faltering.” Jason then prayed in his heavenly language.
I am not a man that I should lie. I will complete the good work I have begun.
Jason released a sigh of relief. “Thank You for hearing me. I’ll wait. However long it takes, I will wait.”

No Greater Love - By: Rita Moore

“A few weeks into my pregnancy the doctor told us, the medications I had been taking caused harm to our child, test showed abnormal fluid. He suggested we terminate the pregnancy, or prepare for a child with birth defects! I was devastated, but my husband reminded me of the God we serve! Abortion was not an option! We found a new doctor, a believer, a doctor who trusted the miracle working love of God! Nine months later we had a perfectly healthy baby girl!”
"On the day of my surgery, prior to being wheeled into surgery, the doctor took my hand and said, “It is my custom to pray with my patients prior to conducting surgery”. I have never known a doctor to do that! Everything happens for a reason. His prayer spoke of his faith and trust in God to guide his hands, and he prayed for my complete healing. I felt confident he was definitely the doctor I needed to perform the surgery. God said He perfects those things that concern us!”

Leap Into Your Destiny- By: Sherae Bell

One morning in late December, as I posted what I expected to be my last prayer to Facebook, my seven-year-old granddaughter, Anashija, ran into the room.
She stood beside me, put her arm around my neck and politely, but in a matter-of-fact manner, said, “Grandma, are you writing your God Notes?”
I did not realize that she had been paying attention. Surprised, I looked at her and said, “My God Notes?”
“Yes, Grandma, your God Notes!”
“Why did you call them my ‘God Notes’?”
She took a deep breathe, sighed and then said, “Grandma, because you write your notes to God every day.” She ran out of the room as if she had completed her mission to confirm that my postings had nothing to do with me and everything to do with God.
God’s timing is always perfect. Not until we acknowledge that it is just that, His timing, will we be able to live as He has designed. Every time I wanted to give up, He stopped me from waving the flag. I realized that God ordained my words. I knew that He had more work for me. God is faithful. He brings to fruition what He has ordained to be accomplished, no matter the package used to deliver it.

Courage To Stand- By Paulette Harper

Have you ever took a step of faith in what you believed you heard from God and got mid-way through and wanted to turn back, put the brakes on, put the car in reverse and start all over? You knew this was not the way you had envisioned your current situation. Everything you see before you tells you that somehow you’ve missed God. Fear settles in, doubt and anxiety comes knocking at your heart.
Prior to taking that step of faith, confidence in what you were doing was strong and un-quenching, yet all alone God knew exactly what trouble awaited you, what problems were in the making and He knew you would be in that place of doubt and disbelief.
In your mind, you began to question if God told you to do this, did you really hear God? For sure if God told you then there shouldn’t be any problems, no challenges, no regrets, right? On the contrary, it’s in those places that we can be assured that God has us right where He wants us. In places of trouble, in that wilderness, in that place where even His still quiet voice is not speaking. This place is where your faith will be stretched, the promises of God will be challenged or questioned. It’s in this place that going back seems like the better solution, at least that’s what your flesh wants you to believe. Clearly what’s in front is more difficult than what is behind.

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage - By: Valerie J. Lewis-Coleman

All eyes were on Jeanine as she took slow orchestrated steps toward the altar. The beaded embellishments on her tailored gown glistened in the sunrays that beamed through the cathedral windows. Every strand of her short bob was in place, Mac makeup flawless. The elegant bouquet of fresh-cut flowers bombarded her senses. For a brief moment, she stopped, closed her eyes, inhaled. The pianist seemed to strike the keys in sync with her racing heart. She opened her eyes and gazed down the aisle to see the groom poised, ready to meet his bride. A full smile washed across her face, she steadied her breathing. As she walked toward him, acknowledging each friend and family member with a glance, slight grin and head nod, she whispered a prayer.
“Father, I thank You for this beautiful day. Everything is coming together as planned; even the weather is perfect. I ask Your grace upon this union. Let it flourish. Keep away the naysayers. Divorce is not an option as this marriage will represent Your unconditional love. I count my request as done. I just have one question: When will it be my turn as bride? I’m happy for my girl, but…I’m tired of being alone, crying myself to sleep. Smiling at every man I meet, hoping, praying that he’s the one. I love my nieces and nephews, but I’m ready to be a mother. The official has shot the gun to start the foot race and I’m stuck in the blocks watching my girlfriends run ahead with husbands in tow. Why am I still single? What is it about me that keeps me on this side of matrimony?”
As the tears flowed, Jeanine took her place, two bridesmaids from the bride. She dabbed at the tears with a monogrammed handkerchief provided by the groomsman who escorted her.

As I Look Back - by: LaDawn Michelle

When I first got clean from drugs I learned in order to positively deal with any feelings I must first identify them. Today there is a popular saying going around “I felt some type of way.” That phrase doesn’t do anything to promote healing. “I feel some type of way” does not identify a feeling. You cannot heal emotionally by identifying with “feeling some type of way.” The only thing the statement does is give a voice to the fact that there is a dysfunction in your emotions. We must be careful that we do not allow our spirits to latch onto the commonalities society gives us that do not promote good emotional health by handicapping us with catchy phrases that mean absolutely nothing once they are dissected. One of the first tools I was given when I got clean from drugs was a feeling words list. In order to embark on a journey of emotional healing, one of your first steps may be to get a feeling word list and use it.

Triumphant Victory - by: Kyna Williams

My mind had been tainted to believe that all the good things in life only happened for the pretty girls with long hair or the children with both parents in the home. I believed the world was filled with two categories of people. One category consisted of “THOSE OTHER PEOPLE” who seemingly have no problems, no hidden secrets, or shameful pasts that stripped them of the freedom to live the “Good Life.” The second category consisted of the broken souls, filled with hopelessness, like me. I was void of even the faintest perception that I would one day have the opportunity to be one of “THOSE OTHER PEOPLE.” I had decided within myself that I was damaged goods. I carried with me the weight of emotional baggage my secretive fragile past had attached to me, limiting my ability to dream of a future where I would be free to live the “Good Life” or any type of life that did not require me to mask who I felt I really was beneath the surface of my glamorous facade. If anyone were to find out who I really was beneath it all, it would certainly result in the complete ruin of the flawless public façade I had mastered displaying.

The Visionary - by: Loureva Slade

“I need you all to trust me,” Pastor Gaines said as he tensely tapped his fingers on the table, unamused by Deacon Clemmons’ humor. “And if that is too difficult, trust that God has put me over this congregation and trust that He won’t allow me to do anything that doesn’t align with His will. Can you all just do that?”

Arianna, tell us about your book?

The Audacity to Forgive is a book that was birthed out of my own personal offense. I was the victim of molestation and rape at the age of 5 years old. The book speaks to that offense and how I overcame it as well as other offenses in my life. The book literally walks the reader through the various paths that I took to forgive my offender.

How did you come up with idea for this book?

I originally wanted to write the book in novel form. At the time, I did not want anyone to know that the story was about me. I felt that I could get the same point across in a novelistic way. God literally shut that down. The project was on hold for nearly 3 years because I could not formulate how it would be written. As a mentor and minister, I began to notice how many people, believers in particular, really suffered from offense. I knew that God has called me to be a vessel that would assist people in overcoming the offense. Nearly three years after I stopped writing, I have written my true story in hopes to deliver millions.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

The most difficult aspect of writing the book was not disclosing who my offender actually was. I wanted to deliver a message of forgiveness rather than hate and condemnation. It was also difficult to revisit some of the things that I had experienced as a child. The difficulty was not due to offense, but rather due to the compassion I had for the little girl I once was and for my offender.

Why do you write?

Writing provides me with a release. Believe it or not, often times my writing is for me and just so happens to bless others.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?

The lesson that I want readers to learn from this book is that forgiveness is always tangible, regardless of what the offense was. God calls his people to forgive so that we ourselves can be forgiven. I want the reader to understand that every offense provides them with an opportunity to obey God. They just need to be coached in how to seize that opportunity.

Who are your favorite authors?

I have quite a few favorite authors. I love T.D. Jakes, Joyce Meyers, and Joel Osteen to name a few.

What book(s) are you reading now?

Other than the Bible, which I read daily, I am currently reading Kimberly Daniels’ “Prayers That Bring Change” and “The Shack” (for the 2nd time).

What books have most influenced your life?

Books that have most influenced my life are “The Shack” which talks about forgiveness and “He Came to Set the Captives Free,” which talks about a woman’s deliverance out of witchcraft and satanic worship. Of course, the Bible is most influential because it has all of life’s answers.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

If I had to choose, Joyce Meyers is definitely a mentor. However, I also consider Kendra Y. Adams and Dr. Alice Millsap as mentors as well.

Any advice to give to aspiring writers?

I would tell aspiring writers to tell their stories. There are people (souls) that are assigned to them and they will not receive true deliverance until they write their stories.

About The Book

book cover

There is a sense of urgency in the atmosphere as God is transitioning what the world has deemed impossible and unbelievable into the possible and the believable. Don’t be alarmed by the "sudden" moves of God.
Pastor Douglass and his family have been positioned for such a move but because of the dense fog of deception that seems to surround them, some in the Douglass family have created their own beliefs, fabricating their own sense of self; negating the truth, God’s truth, even when truth is staring them in the face. They, like many, are living lives devoid of the knowledge of who they really are and robbing themselves and those they love of their true identity and freedom. Deeply embedded lies from enemy have blinded eyes, impaired hearing and hardened hearts and Angels from the army of God have been deployed. The assignment: the execution of God’s divine design. Dreams, supernatural revelation and actual attacks from man's ultimate foe will expose all and confirm God’s plan for Xion, Veronica, Zeborah, Bo and Pastor Douglas. Can they handle the truth and surrender? Will the infrastructure of unbelief crumble? The lives of the Douglass family will never be the same and neither will you, because of THE SHIFT !

5 Ways to Empower Women to Grow: Spiritually and Emotionally, by Paulette Harper #guestpost #spirituality #purpose #amreading #tips

Finding Purpose

"Life without purpose is time without meaning"
 Dr. Miles Monroe

“So many of us allow bad experiences to get the best of us and we don’t learn how to turn those experiences into stepping stones for us to grow spiritually, emotionally, financially or socially. I would be the first to agree that life can be hard and challenging however if we take a look back and begin to analyze how to use those bad experiences to help us in one area of our life, we will never look at bad experiences the same.”

Coming from Paulette Harper‘s book Completely Whole, which provides women of all ages with keys to living a life on purpose, spirit, soul and body.

Finding Purpose in Life

Learning How to Live a Happier Life

1. Accepting that sometimes the “Why” will never get answered. Handling our experience better, comes when we accept the fact that many times we won’t be able to change the outcome to what has happened. We can be resolved knowing it happened for some purpose or reason.

2. There is no easy way out. Many times we want to escape the bad experiences by not dealing with them head on, but that won’t solve anything. Stop for a moment, look at the situation and make the necessary changes that are required to be more empowered.

3. Realize that God is in control. Our lives are totally in the hands of someone who knows how all things will pan out. Trust Him in every situation, knowing that He will guide you as you look to Him for help.

4. Forgive yourself and others. In life people will hurt us. That includes family, spouses, children, and parents. As you forgive others for their trespasses, people will also forgive you.

5. Pray that God will show you what it is He is trying to teach you. Allow this opportunity to let God reveal to you what lessons are to be learned. Treat each experience as a great opportunity to grow and mature.

Don't Look Back, Look Forward, by Tinnie Garlington Virtual Book Tour #NEWRELEASE #NONFICTION #DontLookBack

About the Author

Born and raised in Atlanta GA Tinnie Garlington has always had a passion for teaching. At preschool age Tinnie would tell the class "don't listen to the teacher, listen to me". As she grew older "life" happened and she became a mother at the age of 14. Even though she traveled from school to school, living with anyone who would take her in, she never gave up on learning. Through those experiences she began to write in notebooks about how she was feeling and in some cases make up stories so that she could escape her reality. A high school drop out with no one to turn to but God, she decided at the age of 20 to go back to school to obtain her GED. Times were still tough, but she made it. Shortly after graduating from Atlanta Job Corps, she decided to attend GMI Georgia Medical Institute for her certification as a Medical Administrative Assistant. The journey was still bumpy, but through her will to succeed, she graduated with honors.
Now the Atlanta born "Grady Baby" Tinnie C. Garlington has embarked on her passion to motivate and encourage individuals to see beyond their past. Don't Look Back, Look Forward was birthed from a dark place. Tinnie discovered healing through writing and wrote poetry and plays, yet was too afraid to move forward on her dreams to use this material to teach and encourage others. Well, a close friend and her mother encouraged Tinnie to stop being afraid of the greatness that was inside of her and act on what God has given her. Through that tough love and confirmation, this small yet powerful book was pulled from her personal library and now the world can share in the thoughts hidden in her heart.

Her hopes is that her first book titled "Don't Look Back, Look Forward" will capture the attention of those who are looking for a way forward and encourage them to never give up and allow the hard times to serve as a solid foundation for growth and a positive future.

Author Tinnie, tell us about your book?

Don't Look Back, Look Forward is a book that was written during a time that I was not so sure about the direction that my life was headed. I can recall having these questions and being too afraid to discover the answer. One day I decided to sit down and write down those questions and answer them honestly and without thinking about what to say or how to say it. This book is a combination of my thoughts and pieces of poetry that comes straight from my heart.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

The idea for this book came from people telling me that my poetry is powerful and very inspiring. Also, I have a passion for teaching others and I felt that this book could serve as a teaching tool for many people as well as organizations. It is my goal to develop courses that surround this book. The courses will assist people with reconnecting with their passion and finding a way to move beyond anything that tries to keep them from moving to the next level.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

The most difficult aspect of writing this book was going back in the past and really facing the reality of what I went through and how it made me feel. Reconnecting with the past causes you to feel those same emotions that you felt as if it was happing at that very moment. However, I found strength in reconnecting and knowing that allowing myself to see what I was hiding from was not so bad. It was my stepping stone to greatness!!!
Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently?

I write for therapy and a way to express what is hidden away in my heart. I write so that my legacy can live on and others who have experienced or will unfortunately experience what I have gone through will find my book as a resource for strength.

Who are your favorite authors?

My favorite authors are Bishop TD Jakes, Terry McMillian, John Maxwell, Sista Souljah, and Langston Hughes.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?

The valuable lessons that I would like for my readers to learn is the power of REVEALING. I would like for my readers to remember a quote that I came across during an interview that states "People and things are powerless, your reaction is their only power" by an unknown author. I want them to understand their power to look forward to greatness and know that its okay to not look back.

Any advice to give to aspiring writers?

If I had to give advice to aspiring authors I would tell them to look beyond fear, rejection, or doubt and just be in the moment. Try hard to not be distracted by anything. Do not allow people to contaminate them with their opinions and thoughts. Write from the heart and be present with your feelings. The best work is work that comes from the heart.

About The Book

When life throws a challenge, throw one back. Don't Look Back, Look Forward is a mini book that packs a powerful punch. Author Tinnie Garlington allows you to take a peek into her inner most thoughts and she provides you with her insight on those questions that can sometime keep you from pursuing your passions or moving to the next level. This book inspires you to reconnect with your passion that you may have either suppressed or fear is trying to rob you of. Your life will not be the same when you take this journey and discover the benefits of Looking Forward.

Open this book, and let’s have a heart to heart conversation!

Welcome April, tell us about your book?

‘Altars of the Heart’ is about how to experience a deeper relationship with the Lord from a pure heart. It takes the reader on a journey of self-evaluation and self-discovery where they are able to understand why the events of their past continue to trouble them in the present. This book is not a cookie-cutter; one-size fits all approach to worship, but rather an individual “guided tour” that helps the reader discover their own path to deeper worship.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

‘Altars of the Heart’ came from my personal study time. I was doing a study on the life of Abraham, and that study led to a personal interest in the altars in bible. Because of this interest I began to study the meaning and uses of altars in Scripture. My study opened my spiritual eyes to the connection between the altars in the bible and the spiritual heart of man.

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading your book?

My hope is that reader will take the journey and submit to an honest heart conversation with their selves and allow God to reveal to them what he desires of them, so that they can experience their own victory available to them through Jesus Christ.

Where can visitors find you online?

I am on Facebook and Twitter. I also have my own website at: www.warriorforchristpublishing.com

What inspired you to write this book?

After doing the study on the altars in the bible and seeing the connection between them and the heart of man, I took my own journey of self-evaluation and self-discovery and after allowing myself to go through the process I knew I had to share. I wanted to share what I had learned and what I was able to achieve in my own walk with the Lord.

What’s next for you?

I am excited about the release of this book, and I believe that I will write a follow-up book that will continue to help readers move forward in the journey process.

How can someone get a copy of the book?

‘Altars of the Heart’ is available online at Amazon.com as well as, my website www.warriorforchristpublishing.com. The book is also available on e-book through Amazon.com and Barnes and Nobles.com

Tell us about yourself?

I am an Army wife and mother of two teenage children. I have been married to my husband and very best friend for over 18 years. I also served in the military in the U.S. Air Force. I am an only child, born and raised in Springfield, Ohio.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?

I would say being able to write the book and share my story without sharing other peoples stories. I was very careful to write in a way that I was the only person exposed to the reader. It was not necessary to force others to be a part of something they may or may not be ready for. I have learned through my own journey that my testimony is all about bringing God glory and that does not leave room to offend or put down others. I f I need to do that in order to share a “testimony” then I need to reevaluate my motives.
Did you have to do any special research for your book? Why do you write? Is it something you've always done, or always wanted to do? Or is it something that you started fairly recently?

I wrote this book because of my desire to share what I learned through personal study. This is not something I ever considered doing before, but I am excited about the possibility of the next book.

About The Book

Icia Graham’s love affair with Rakim Transou had the makings of a fairy tale romance with the happily ever after ending, until the night of Rakim’s college graduation party. For Icia, it was the night her life was forever changed. So desperate to escape the horrific memories she’d suddenly been saddled with, Icia left school and the man she loved. The years passed and; in that time, both Rakim and Icia reached goals that carried them to the heights of success. For Rakim it was a powerful advertising agency that brought him a respected and revered name in the business. Icia’s accomplishment was a bit darker, but no less revered and she had no desire to revisit the past and be tortured by thoughts of love lost with the only man she’d ever wanted. A series of events however, would bring Icia right back to where she swore she’d never return. Once more Rakim Transou was back in her life and she was simultaneously overjoyed and distraught. How could she start anew with the man who still meant everything to her, when there were so many secrets between them? When the need for vengeance on those; who were still very much a part of Rakim’s life, still raged so viciously inside her?

Houston, Texas~

"Here you go, Val," Rakim Transou was saying to his assistant as he signed the last of the three contracts on his desk. "I don't have time, man," he grumbled to his Vice President.
Charles 'Cory" Henderson shook his head at his boss and best friend, before perching his lean body on the edge of the desk. "You need to think about this, Kimm."

"Is that it, Valerie?" Rakim sighed, pleased to see his mound of work slowly dissolving.
Val scanned the documents and smiled. "That's it," she sang and headed out of the office.
"Kimm, what's the point of owning this place if you're not gonna have fun runnin' it?" Cory asked, once Val was gone.
Rakim ran both hands over his soft, close-cut hair. "The last thing I need to do is waste my day looking at pictures."
"Of models," Cory pointed out, smiling devilishly. "Do you know how stress-relieving that can be?"
Rakim groaned. "Here we go," he said, leaning back in his leather swivel chair. "You know I get tired of you telling me how sad my life is. If I hadn't been focused on business all these years, you wouldn't be working for one of the most successful ad agencies in the country."

Cory nodded, familiar with the speech. He cleared his throat and braced his hands on top of the polished cherry wood desk. "And given that you own one of the most successful agencies in the country, why can't you have some fun?"
Rakim leaned forward to pin Cory with his deep, obsidian stare. "I don't want one of the most successful agencies. I want the most successful agency, period."
Cory slapped a hand against his bald head. "Man, thinking like that'll never get you a steady woman."
"I can live with that," Rakim easily replied, focusing his attention on the appointment book lying open on the desk.
"I give up," Cory mumbled and walked out of the plush, twentieth floor office.
Alone, Rakim allowed the facade to fade. He massaged the bridge of his nose, then opened the bottom desk drawer and pulled a tattered envelope from the back. The expression was fixed, intense on his handsome, dark-chocolate face. His midnight gaze was riveted on the contents of the note he knew by heart.

Rakim,
I'm so sorry I couldn’t be there today. Something's happened and I have to leave. I'll be changing schools. Don't try to find me. My parents won't tell you anything. I hate doing this to you, but I can't see you again. I just can't. I do love you-so much. It's really better like this. I love you, but if you hate me now, I understand. Coco.

As usual, once Rakim finished reading the letter, he pressed the page to his nose. He swore he could still smell her perfume clinging to it.

The relationship they shared had been so right. She was everything to him and he trusted her with his life. When he walked into his bedroom the afternoon of the graduation, his entire world changed. He found the note lying in the center of the bed. Icia Graham had taken anything else that would have reminded him of her-including all the pictures. The brief letter provided no answers. It was most effective; however, in helping him lose his temper. Rakim grunted as he remembered the way he demolished the house. Cory and Fred had been so spooked by his mood that they left him alone for a week.

Just then, Cory's earlier comments filtered his mind. He had completely buried himself in work after Icia left. He took the job he'd been offered in Richmond and worked there while obtaining his Masters degree. Afterwards, he went back home to Houston and put everything he had into building his company. Now, The Transou Agency was respected by its competitors and clients alike.

Of course, Rakim acknowledged that his private life may have suffered. Not that there weren't women. There had been several. Unfortunately, he only had to be in the relationship for a matter of months, before he began to compare his companion to Icia. Not even that flaw could keep the women away, though. Rakim Transou's good looks seem to intensify with age. He stood well over six feet and had been blessed with a flawless deep chocolate complexion and the type of lean, muscular frame that flattered everything he wore. The thick, curly afro he used to sport had been trimmed to a close-cut fade. The style only enhanced his pitch, deep-set eyes and sleek brows. His wide mouth was made more enticing by the set of double dimples which appeared whenever he spoke or smiled.

About The Book

There have been five black ballerinas that have made a noticeable mark in the world of ballet. Five that have fought to have the world see their talent rather than the color of their skin. Each has graced the stage as soloist and/or principal dancer. Precious Blue Johnson is set to become one of them. Precious Blue Johnson, young, country and naive, from Lutts County, Georgia, is traveling to the energizing city of New York to search for her birth father and perhaps make history by becoming the first black ballerina. She will be guided by the vivacious and wise Ms. Ann and fall in love with the alluring Ray Silvers. Ray brings the whole package. Enchanting eyes, a bright future as a doctor, and a willingness to love completely. To Precious, he is perfect. Except Ray’s package includes his deadly past. Chapter One Excerpt

They say on the night that I was born June 30, 1969the fringes of the moon could be seen peeking out through the thin layers of the clouds. They say that the rain had done come down so hard it felt like something was tearing away at your soul, drop by drop. They say my mama was laying in the birthing room screaming because I was ripping her life away from her. They say that the doctors wanted to cut away at her tummy, but she had done plain-out refused. She was an ebullient woman, with the heart of an unbreakable but beautiful stallion.
I ain't never seen the woman with eyes so blue they felt like they could reach down into the pit of your core and tell you about yourself. I ain't never seen the warmth of her smile or the way she could soothe my daddy with her kind-hearted words. People talk under their breath about her. Talk about how long her silky blond hair was or how thin and soft her frame was. I do alls I can when I hear them whispering about the woman who gave her life so I could dance in the rain on a hot summer day.

Just before she took her last breath they say that she stared into my eyes and smiled because I done come into the world with what she thought was the better part of her. The one feature that my daddy loved the most.
She was the one who placed the weight of my name upon me. Precious Blue Johnson, but everyone around here in Lutts County, Georgia, fixed my name at Precious.
My dear, sweet Daddy is a tall, well-stocked-around-the-tummy man. I heard that back in his heyday he sported a nicely trimmed frame of six feet, two inches. That his hair used to be slicked back so perfectly there wasn't a black woman in Lutts County that wasn't dying to give it a coat or two of sweet brown sugar with the very tips of their hard-worked fingers.

His shoulders hang now sometimes, but that wasn't always the case. No, it be said that when Charles Johnson used to walk down these dirt-filled roads, his shoulders stood towering with an air of confidence that one could breathe in from a mile away.

Once upon a time, it be rumored that his hazel brown eyes were fixed on singing his way out of Lutts County. They still talk about this fact in the rooms of their barely-able-to-stand homes, where they figure can't nobody hear them but God. Whispering under the dim lights about how it is such a shame that he wasted his talent on a white woman.
There are nights when I would wonder what his voice must have sounded like. I would hear him humming sometimes, but I ain't never heard the sound of butter flowing from his lips.
That's what they say he sounded like.
